SMART CITY & URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS
City Authorities in India have established Executing Agencies or Corporations for implementation of projects under Smart City Mission of Government of India. Smart City Corporations are generally the tendering authority for engaging consultants for planning, design and monitoring of Smart City Projects for each city. GE Consultants had the opportunity of working on 4 smart city projects in the role of Roads and Traffic Consultant representing the Primary Consultant.
1. Detailed Engineering for Upgradation of Agartala City Roads of 22km length Under Agartala Smart City Project
Owner: Agartala Smart City Ltd
Client: Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd Funding Agency: Asian Development Bank Scope of Work: - Identify locations of sub-standard geometry on existing roads in the Area Based Development (ABD) region - Geometric Improvement of existing roads to meet the established standards for Smart City Roads - Developed Digital Terrain Models using Autodesk Civil 3D for existing site and the proposed site post road development - Detailed Cross Sections at 20 m intervals for assisting the civil work by contractor - Preparation of PPDs, working drawings, stake-out details |
- Retrofitting Plans including sign & marking, traffic channelizing and junction improvement schemes
- Detailed Design of Roundabouts and Signalized and Non- Signalized Intersections Challenges: > Availability of Right of Way (ROW) is a major constraint in most of the Cities in India due to congested neighbourhoods. > Our major challenge was to optimize the use of available ROW in order to achieve the threshold Design Speeds recommended for the particular functional class of the urban road. |
2. Detailed Engineering for Solapur Priority Roads of 10km length Under Solapur Smart City Project
Owner: Solapur City Development Corporation Ltd (SCDCL)
Scope of Work:
- Preliminary Geometric design of 10 km roads in ABD region for Good-For-Tender Drawings
- Hydrological Analysis of the ABD region
- Reconnaissance survey to study the catchment area for the ABD region
- 5 Existing nallas (canals) were identified as crucial for Discharge of Surface Run-off in the catchment
- Preliminary Hydraulic analysis for road side drains
- Historic data from Central Water Commission (CWC) for 25 year storm was used for analysis
- Detailed Bill of Quantities & Cost Estimates for Road and Drainage civil works was prepared by us

3. Detailed Surveys, Design & Estimate for Roads in Balewadi area under Pune Smart City
Owner: Pune Smart City Development Corporation Limited (PSCDCL)
Client: PriMove Infrastructure Development Consultants Pvt Ltd, Pune Scope of Work: - Geotechnical investigations by taking Trial Pits to determine the subgrade CBR values - BBD tests to determine the strength of existing pavement - Traffic Data collection - Classified Volume Count (CVC) & Turning Movement Counts (TMC) - Analysis of Traffic Impact on roads in ABD area - Capacity Analysis of roads in ABD area to determine adequacy of proposed cross-sections and future widening requirement |

4. Traffic Impact Assessment for Orange Smart City Near Pen
Owner: Orange Smart City Pvt Ltd
Client: MITCON, Pune
Project Description:
- Orange Smart City includes 4 planned townships of total site area of over 1000 acres and total built-up area of 8.64 M Sq.m
- The project envisages development of combined land-use for Industrial, Residential & Commercial clusters with State-of-the-Art infrastructure including Smart Roads & Transport Network and Mass Transit Facility
- GE Consultants was involved in conducting Traffic Impact Assessment Study for the project
Scope of Work:
- A Gravity Model was developed to understand and estimate the Traffic Impact due to the development
- Trips Generation due to the proposed township was estimated by correlating the socio-economic status of inhabitants to their trip patterns using Mathematical Models
- Trip Distribution & Allocation patterns were estimated on the basis of study of existing road network adjoining the proposed site
- Traffic Impact during Construction Period was separately estimated using different set of Mathematical Models
- Modal Split was determined from Multinomial Logistic Regression Models with Modal Choice as the Choice Variable and Socio-economic factors and other mode specific factors as the Predictor variables
- The estimated traffic impact was Forecasted to future years at various growth scenarios.
- Detailed Post Development Capacity Analysis for the surrounding road network was done using the Indo-HCM procedures
